MOTS-c Where to Buy
Published
A verifiable MOTS-c source publishes an independent third-party batch report showing 3 things: the HPLC purity percentage, the measured quantity in the vial, and a lab verify key anyone can check on the testing lab's website. The research behind the peptide is mostly animal and cell work, and the human studies, such as a 16-week randomized exercise trial of 49 breast cancer survivors, measured the body's own MOTS-c, which rose only in the 24 non-Hispanic White women. None of the studies reviewed here gave synthetic MOTS-c to people.
What a verifiable MOTS-c batch report shows
MOTS-c is sold as a research peptide, not as a regulated drug, so the paperwork behind each batch is the main check on quality. A 2026 review in Sports Medicine described a gray market for peptides, including MOTS-c, that operates largely outside regulatory oversight. A verifiable source responds to that problem with an independent third-party batch report that shows three items. These are the HPLC purity percentage, the measured quantity in the vial, and a lab verify key that anyone can enter on the lab's website to confirm the report.Review · PMID 41966639
The measurement method matters for this peptide. In a 2019 doping-control study, a commercial ELISA reported MOTS-c levels in 20 healthy people that liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry could not confirm, and the two methods gave considerably different numbers. That finding is about blood levels, not vials. It still shows why a named lab and a report anyone can check carry weight.Human observational · PMID 30394592
What MOTS-c is and how it was discovered
MOTS-c is a 16-amino-acid peptide encoded in the 12S rRNA region of mitochondrial DNA. It was first described in 2015. In that study, its main target appeared to be skeletal muscle, where it inhibited the folate pathway and de novo purine synthesis, which led to AMPK activation. In mice, MOTS-c exposure blocked age-related and high-fat-diet insulin resistance, as well as diet-induced obesity.Animal study · PMID 25738459Review · PMID 27216708
Later work mapped more of its biology. In cultured cells under glucose restriction, MOTS-c moved into the nucleus, regulated genes with antioxidant response elements and interacted with NRF2. A 2024 study found that MOTS-c binds and activates the enzyme CK2 in cell-free systems. In mice, muscle atrophy was smaller and muscle glucose uptake was higher, and these effects were blunted when CK2 was suppressed. Men who carried a natural K14Q variant that binds CK2 poorly had a higher risk of sarcopenia and type 2 diabetes. In vitro · PMID 29983246Animal study · PMID 39559755
Human studies measure the body's own MOTS-c
None of the randomized trials reviewed here gave synthetic MOTS-c to people. The human trials track natural levels instead. In a randomized study of 30 adults, 10 completed 45 minutes of endurance exercise at 70% of estimated VO2max, 10 did resistance exercise and 10 served as controls. Humanin rose after endurance exercise, while MOTS-c showed only an upward trend. Neither peptide correlated with VO2max or leg strength.Human RCT · PMID 34351816
A 16-week randomized trial of aerobic and resistance exercise enrolled 49 breast cancer survivors. MOTS-c rose compared with baseline and with usual care among the 24 non-Hispanic White women (p < 0.01), but not among the 25 Hispanic women. In the non-Hispanic White group, post-exercise levels correlated inversely with fat mass, body weight, HOMA-IR and CRP, and positively with lean mass.Human RCT · PMID 34413391
In a randomized study of 19 active men, repeated heat exposure during two weeks of ankle immobilization raised circulating MOTS-c compared with sham (P = 0.033). Immobilization alone did not change it. In a separate randomized trial, women with HER2-positive breast cancer were assigned cancer drugs with or without metformin and followed for 24 weeks. Circulating MOTS-c did not change significantly in either group.Human RCT · PMID 40674654Human RCT · PMID 36490309
Age changes the picture. Circulating MOTS-c was lower in older men. Even so, men aged 70-81 and 45-55 had about 1.5-fold higher muscle MOTS-c expression than men aged 18-30. A 2021 study reported that MOTS-c levels in muscle and blood samples from people went up during exercise. However, a 2026 study found no arterio-venous difference during one-legged knee-extensor exercise, which suggests that muscle may not be the source of the rise in the blood.Human observational · PMID 32182209Animal study · PMID 33473109Animal study · PMID 41520850
Disease associations in observational cohorts
An observational study followed 121 people with type 2 diabetes and recently revascularized coronary artery disease for two years, and 22 had cardiac death or acute coronary syndrome. After adjustment, low MOTS-c predicted those events with a relative risk of 3.8. Low MOTS-c combined with high platelet reactivity carried about a 4.4-fold risk. A validation cohort of 90 people confirmed the pattern.Human observational · PMID 32052315
In 20 adults, plasma MOTS-c did not differ between the 10 lean and 10 obese participants. It did correlate with HOMA (r = 0.53) and the Matsuda index (r = -0.46), mainly in lean people. In a study of 404 people with hepatitis B and 85 healthy controls, MOTS-c correlated negatively with HBV DNA (R = -0.71). Serum MOTS-c was also lower in people with type 1 or type 2 diabetes than in healthy controls.Human observational · PMID 29593067Human observational · PMID 37788894Animal study · PMID 34320351Animal study · PMID 40855115
These are correlations. They show where natural MOTS-c levels differ, not what happens when the peptide is given to people. A 2026 review of sepsis-related heart disease called MOTS-c plausible but insufficiently validated and flagged open questions about how specific it is as a biomarker and how the body handles it.Review · PMID 42633878
Animal and cell findings drive most of the interest
In mice, MOTS-c raised physical performance in young (2 months), middle-aged (12 months) and old (22 months) animals. Exposure that began at 23.5 months also raised physical capacity. In two transgenic mouse strains, muscle mitochondrial bioenergetic performance rose and reactive oxygen species emission fell. Both effects depended on PGC-1α and AMPK.Animal study · PMID 33473109Animal study · PMID 41520850
In diet-induced obese mice, MOTS-c lowered plasma myostatin. In cultured C2C12 myotubes, it blocked atrophy induced by palmitic acid. In muscle progenitor cells from people and mice, wild-type MOTS-c increased myotube formation, but a Y8F mutant did not.Animal study · PMID 33554779In vitro · PMID 35842023
The glucose findings also come from animals. In a mouse model of gestational diabetes, glucose readings in the MOTS-c group were below those of control mice, insulin sensitivity measures were higher, and fewer offspring died. In non-obese diabetic mice, hyperglycemia and immune infiltration of the islets were lower. In diabetic rats, abnormalities in cardiac structure and function were smaller.Animal study · PMID 34798268Animal study · PMID 34320351Animal study · PMID 35370955
Results in other models vary widely. In cells and mice, MOTS-c slowed ovarian cancer growth without reported systemic toxicity, and it inhibited hepatitis B replication by 50-70%. In rats with lung ischemia-reperfusion injury, markers of oxidative damage and inflammation were reduced compared with controls, and fewer animals died.Animal study · PMID 39321430Human observational · PMID 37788894Animal study · PMID 40403491
Safety data, regulatory status and sport testing
Human safety data are thin. A 2026 review of peptides marketed to athletes, including MOTS-c, concluded that rigorous human safety data are scarce and noted the potential for serious harm. A 2023 review stated that no established method for the clinical application of MOTS-c had been developed.Review · PMID 41966639Review · PMID 36761202
Anti-doping labs have tracked the peptide since at least 2016, when researchers listed MOTS-c among emerging compounds that affect muscle and mitochondria. In 2019, a mass spectrometry assay for MOTS-c in blood plasma was validated under WADA's laboratory standard. The assay also covers four metabolites and two oxidation products.Review · PMID 26842585Human observational · PMID 30394592
Because the human evidence is limited to measurements of natural MOTS-c, any compound's research value depends on what is actually in the vial, which is why batch testing matters.Review · PMID 41966639

Frequently asked questions
Is MOTS-c safe?
None of the studies reviewed here measured the safety of synthetic MOTS-c in people. A 2026 review of peptides sold for sports use, including MOTS-c, concluded that rigorous human safety data are scarce and noted the potential for serious harm. The animal reports are narrower. In mice with ovarian tumors, the authors reported no systemic toxicity, and in hepatitis B-infected mice and cells they reported no notable toxicity. These are animal and cell observations, not human safety data.Review · PMID 41966639Animal study · PMID 39321430Human observational · PMID 37788894
Is MOTS-c banned by WADA?
The studies reviewed here do not state where MOTS-c stands on the World Anti-Doping Agency list. They do show interest from anti-doping researchers. A 2016 review by sports drug-testing researchers flagged MOTS-c among emerging compounds that athletes could misuse. In 2019, a mass spectrometry method for detecting MOTS-c in blood plasma was validated under WADA's International Standard for Laboratories. It covers the peptide, four metabolites and two oxidation products.Review · PMID 26842585Human observational · PMID 30394592
Is MOTS-c a GLP-1?
No. MOTS-c is a 16-amino-acid peptide encoded in the 12S rRNA region of mitochondrial DNA. The studies reviewed here describe it acting through the folate pathway and AMPK, moving into the nucleus under metabolic stress, and binding the enzyme CK2. None of them describes action at the GLP-1 receptor. Its glucose findings, such as the glucose changes measured in a mouse model of gestational diabetes, come from animal work.Animal study · PMID 25738459In vitro · PMID 29983246Animal study · PMID 39559755
Does MOTS-c reduce body fat?
In mice, MOTS-c exposure blocked diet-induced obesity in the 2015 study that first described the peptide. None of the human studies reviewed here gave people MOTS-c and measured body fat. In a 16-week randomized exercise trial of 49 breast cancer survivors, post-exercise MOTS-c among non-Hispanic White participants correlated inversely with fat mass and body weight. That finding reflects exercise and the body's own peptide. Plasma levels did not differ between 10 lean and 10 obese adults.Animal study · PMID 25738459Human RCT · PMID 34413391Human observational · PMID 29593067
Does MOTS-c give people energy?
None of the human studies reviewed here measured energy or fatigue after MOTS-c exposure. In mice, MOTS-c raised physical performance in young, middle-aged and old animals, and exposure that began at 23.5 months raised physical capacity. In two transgenic mouse strains, muscle mitochondrial bioenergetic performance rose and reactive oxygen species emission fell, and both effects depended on PGC-1α and AMPK. These are mouse results and do not show an energy effect that people would feel.Animal study · PMID 33473109Animal study · PMID 41520850
