Testing method
Benzyl alcohol assay
For laboratory research use only. Not for human consumption.
- What it measures
- The concentration of benzyl alcohol, the preservative in bacteriostatic water.
- How it works
- Benzyl alcohol is separated and quantified by HPLC or gas chromatography against a reference standard.
- Sample
- A portion of the water from the vial.
- Result reported as
- Milligrams of benzyl alcohol per millilitre (mg/mL). A 0.9% w/v label corresponds to 9 mg/mL.
- Limits
- Measures the preservative only. It is a concentration, not a purity figure.
- Standards
- USP General Chapter <621> Chromatography
- On our reports
- 2 of 23 published accessory reports are benzyl alcohol assays (10.15 mg/mL).
