THE ENDOGENOUS AND EXOGENOUS MOLECULES ARE NOT INTERCHANGEABLE, and that distinction runs through its whole literature: almost every published measurement concerns the pool cells synthesise for themselves, because the intact tripeptide is not generally carried across the plasma membrane. Extracellular gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase cleaves it to constituent amino acids, which are taken back up and re-assembled inside the cell, so the exogenous molecule and the intracellular pool are linked by degradation and resynthesis rather than by direct transfer.
