What “Research Use Only” Means

“Research use only” (RUO) is not a slogan — it is an accurate classification of what a material is and how it may lawfully be handled. This guide explains what RUO materials are, what they are explicitly not, and the responsibilities that come with purchasing and handling them.

What RUO materials are

Research-use-only materials are reagents supplied for laboratory research — analytical, in-vitro, and characterisation work. They are sold as chemical materials, described by their identity and purity, and nothing more. At Ouralus every compound is supplied as a lyophilized powder and, where tested, documented with a third-party certificate of analysis.

What RUO materials are not

Research-use-only materials are explicitly not:

• Not drugs — they are not approved by the FDA for human use, and are not medicines.
• Not supplements or foods — they are not dietary products of any kind.
• Not cosmetics or medical devices.
• Not for human or animal consumption — not to be ingested, injected, or otherwise administered to people or animals.

Because they are not any of those things, no therapeutic, medical, dosing, or benefit claims are made about them anywhere on this site — and we cannot advise on use. A material's certificate tells you what it is; it does not tell you it is safe or suitable for any purpose.

Why the label exists

The RUO designation reflects the material's actual status: an uncharacterised-for-human-use research chemical, not an approved product. Labelling it accurately — rather than implying a use it isn't approved for — is how a research supplier represents its materials honestly. It is the same reason we publish purity as a measured figure rather than a promise, and mark chemical identifiers we haven't independently confirmed as “[VERIFY]” rather than guessing them.

The purchaser's responsibility

With research materials, responsibility for lawful and safe handling sits with the buyer. By purchasing, you take responsibility for:

• ensuring your purchase, possession, handling, storage, and use comply with all applicable laws in your jurisdiction;
• determining whether a given material is legal for you to purchase and possess where you are;
• safe and lawful handling, storage, and disposal, per your laboratory's protocols;
• not reselling or transferring materials unlawfully, and not using or promoting them for human or animal consumption.
